Frequently Asked Questions

What is the California Cool Air Rebate Program?
The California Cool Air Rebate Program provides financial assistance to eligible Californians to repair leaking air conditioning systems with R-134a refrigerant in cars and light duty trucks. Fix your AC, enjoy a cool ride, and improve the air quality in your community.
Who is eligible for the program?
To be eligible, you must live in California and own a car manufactured between 1993 and 2019, or have an older vehicle retrofitted with R-134a refrigerant. There is also an income requirement based on 225% of the federal poverty level.
What determines if my vehicle is eligible for repair?
Your vehicle must be leaking R-134a refrigerant. Not all vehicles use this refrigerant, and not all AC failures are due to refrigerant leaks. Call us at (510) 518-3628 to confirm your vehicle uses R-134a before applying.
How do I apply for the program?
Visit coolairrebate.org/pre-qualify to see if you pre-qualify and to complete the application. You will need proof of income or enrollment in qualified programs such as Medi-Cal, CalFresh, CalWORKs, or California Healthy Families.
What services are covered by the program?
The program helps pay for AC repairs if your car is leaking R-134a refrigerant. First, you need a diagnostic test at a participating shop like TL Auto Repair. If your car qualifies, the program pays up to 90% of the repair cost, with a maximum of $1,500. You pay the remaining balance directly to the shop.
How much will it cost me?
If your vehicle qualifies, the program covers 90% of the repair cost up to $1,500. You are responsible for the remaining amount. For example, if the repair costs $400, the program pays $360 and you pay $40. If the repair costs $2,000, the program pays $1,500 and you pay $500. The program also covers 100% of the diagnostic fee for qualifying repairs.
Am I automatically qualified if I’m enrolled in Medi-Cal, CalFresh, CalWORKs, or CA Healthy Families?
Yes, if you or your family are enrolled in Medi-Cal, CalFresh, CalWORKs, or California Healthy Families, you are automatically pre-qualified. You must still have a qualifying vehicle (1993–2019) that uses R-134a refrigerant and your vehicle must have a leak.
What documentation do I need?
You will need proof of income (recent pay stubs, tax return, W-2, or Social Security benefit letter) or proof of state benefits enrollment (a letter from the Department of Social Services showing enrollment in Medi-Cal, CalFresh, or CalWORKs). All documents must be dated within the last 6 months.
How long is my approval valid?
Approvals are valid for six months and extensions are not available. If your approval expires before you use the rebate, you will need to submit a new application with updated income verification.
Where can I get more information?
